Hello, I’m Grant French. I have been a carpenter for over 30 years, and for the last 19 years have been working for French and Thorley. In that time I have been involved in a wide range of projects. I spent 3 years working for a local firm, Walter Llewellyn, gaining City & Guilds and advanced craft qualification.
For eight years I worked as a shop fitter, working all over the country carrying out refurbishments for banks, building societies and domestic property in London.
These projects often involved all aspects of building and a lot of traveling and meeting trades’ people from all walks of life I like a challenge and take pride in my work. I always have the attitude of completing projects to the standards I would expect in my own home.
At times running your own business can be stressful, but in the last 18 years have built a team around us with the same attitude and experience as us. I really can say I love my job transforming properties and always enjoy the challenge.
We are hardworking, trustworthy, clean and tidy, enthusiastic, approachable, and carry out all our work with skill and integrity.
Rob retired 7 years ago to spend more time on the golf course and in the garden. Jim Smith came back in March 2020 and we have continued to grow and look forward to many more projects and years together.
In my spare time I enjoy traveling to cities with friends, mountain biking windsurfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, yoga, golf, walking and of course spending time with my wife and my children.

Hi. My name is Jim Smith, Director of French & Thorley.
As Director, I oversee and manage our team, sub-contractors and sites.I am also directly engaged with clients throughout projects.
My carpentry skill and expertise are highly refined and you will see me on the tools as much as possible.
I’m equipped with over 15 years experience of skilled trade, business management & customer service.
My link with French & Thorley dates back to my apprenticeship years and I am very passionate about the firm and proud of its achievements.
I am one of few who can honestly say that they love their job and enjoy what they do.
I’m also very lucky that outside of work, I’m a husband and a father to 3 amazing children. I keep busy in my spare time playing golf and riding my bike.

Hi I’m Tracey French
I’ve been involved with French & Thorley from the very beginning all those years ago, due to family connections. I previously worked in Customer Services for 17 years, so after having our second child I decided to join the team and have never looked back.
I’m the office contact, manage appointments, daily activities of running the business.
I love spending time with our two children and Grant, walking our dog and socialising with our family and friends.
